George Xu Elementary Exercises VideoElementary Exercises for Developing Internal Martial Skill: 14 Essential Everyday Moves
(with English Subtitles)

In this video, Master Xu leads 14 Essential Everyday moves and explains how to practice them in order to ultimately make space power generate martial force. George talks about wu wei- do without doing. This is yin yang, to do and not do at the same time. The mind energy is harmonized to the physical. The physical, as in a tiger, reacts reflexively to what the mind sees. He says feel and think, don't do it, feel what the mind sees. The reflex is called shi. Like tsunami force ready to crash, a tiger ready to pounce.

At the core of his system is training the concept of Four Becomes One in open/close, shrinking/expanding, spiral turning, empty/full, up/down, gather/release, using the “center,” or Zhong Ding force, as the source of movement. “Looks simple,” Master Xu says, but “not easy to do.” 48 min ($29.95)

George Xu Silk ReelingTai Chi Silk Reeling and Martial Applications with George Xu 2 Vol Set (Subtitled)

Whether you’re interested in kungfu for martial arts or taijiquan for health and well-being, chan shi jing, or spiral training, is a foundational exercise in which you can develop great muscle toning from feet to hands and a powerful coiling force. It is especially useful in push hands two-person practice (Tui Shou). In this most recent instructional video, Master George Xu demonstrates about 20 basic moves and describes them from the point of view of chan shi jing steeped in his Predator Theory of Movement.

This two-volume video totals two-hours in length and is available with English subtitles. In two hours, you can get enough new single-basic moves and concepts for your practice to keep you busy for weeks. Plus, Master Xu vigorously demonstrates a variety of two-person fighting moves with Tim Richard, and one of his oldest female students, Susan A. Matthews.

In Part One, Master Xu talks about his thoughts and explanations of Chan Shi Jing as it applies in his Predator Theory and his approach to fighting applications. As a foundation, cha shi jing is basic part of the process of training for fighting. He shows how you can practice chan shi jing as snake, python, or his preferred practice style: “tiger style,” which his talks about at length.

In Part Two, Master Xu leads 20 stationary and walking drills that you can follow along with. He breaks down moves and demonstrates with Tim and Susan how he applies his theory to each one in a two-person, fighting practice; or, what he calls “testing.”

Shot completely in a studio setting this footage was taped before a weekend workshop hosted annually in Cortez by Shifu Susan A. Matthews and Tim Richard. It condenses a 2 ½ day workshop into two hours of intensive training.

One unique addition to his documented body of knowledge is how a single-basic movement in chan shi jing can be practiced and applied. For example, he shows a few ways you can move the elbow in chan shi jing. This “middle” chan shi jing can be done in different directions, or “dimensions.” He provides many other examples.

Viewers can undoubtedly pick up new moves, as well as concepts for doing them, through the lens of spiral training, or silk reeling, as it is also called. Intermediate to advanced practitioners, interested in the applications of basic moves in tai chi, xing-yi and bagua, can pick up some useful techniques as Master Xu breaks down familiar basic moves, and even a sequence or two of moves, into their individual components.

What sets the information in the video apart from previous Xu videos is the increased explication on the use of muscles in martial arts, which we found to be very useful in our applications. In the past, Master Xu had mentioned the role of muscles to get better connected and develop a more powerful posture. In this footage, he goes more in-depth with muscle training than we have seen before. As he says, usage of “different muscles to create different forces.”

In describing the effectiveness of his system, Master Xu compares the use of muscles in chan shi jing across different martial arts, and also compares taiji to other fighting styles, such as MMA and boxing, in regard to organization, speed and effectiveness. He describes one technique as a “rolling” force or an “infinity” technique for engaging with an opponent.

“Martial arts has five possibilities,” according to Master Xu as he describes his “style” of fighting: dead arm, vertical force or zhong ding, body art, space power, and “scientific” force. All of which comprise his system called Xin Tian Ling Kong Shen Shi.

One key piece of information Master Xu brings out in the video is the need for practitioners to change how they use the arms to be more effective in martial arts. He has talked about this in part during in-person workshops, but this may be the first time his take on it is captured to video. We think you’ll want to watch it and study the content several times over.

George Xu Defines His System in Chinese Martial Arts

george xu videoGeorge Xu Ling Kong Shen Shi Men (with Subtitles)

This double-video set of Ling Kong Shen Shi Men LECTURE and EXERCISES from Master Xu Guo Ming (George) represent his most complete elucidation of a system of Chinese martial art that encompasses his predator theory, yet goes beyond. These two volumes, comprising 2.5 hours of lecture, testing, demonstration and follow along single, basic exercises (57 minutes) build upon last year's release, Superior Power in Chinese Martial Arts. However, this is the first time Master Xu has give his system its name of Ling Kong Shen Shi Men. As he says in the beginning of the video, "Ling is traveling. Kong is empty in space. My force is traveling in the space. Shen is spiritual, mental. Shi is potential, invisible, indirect, force. Shi is not jing."

Master Xu explains what all of these concepts mean in his lecture, filmed in a studio setting with good lighting and sounds. Then in our Exercise video, he leads workshop practitioners, in single, basics to help them train for the essential goals in his system. Those include dead arms, dragon body, internal goes before external, nei jing, an jing, hua jing, the five powers and the four emptinesses.

You won't get form in these lessons, or a lot of technique. As Master Xu says, ""If you understand all of the four emptinesses, technique is useless." Other quotes from him that you'll hear in this footage include, "My maximum attacks your minimum." "Melt the jing, become the si into the space energy." Watch and listen closely to Master Xu's lecture and exercise lessons often and begin to absorb this very unique, effective information from one of Chinese martial arts master practitioners known for his open teaching. He wants practitioners to "get it" and enthusiastically shares all he can to foster understanding in his students.

Superior Power From Indirect Invisible Force: Advanced Training on Vertical Force, Gravity, Internal Body Art, and Space

This video describes how to maximize power even more fully.
George describes doing nothing to get everything with pure internal, the power of emptiness, hua jing, invisible force, where everything physical melts. The power is indirect. Mind affects the space field, connected to internal body art that finally directs the physical. He gives exercises and testing to amplify your force with this invisible force, borrowing force from the sun and the earth.

Vertical force results from transferring the opponent’s force to the ground, creating sinking and rising force at the same time. Use their force against them. Reaction force is invisible and indirect. The more sinking force to the ground, the more comes back. With melting more comes back.

Gravity is heavy dead weight of whole body with no physical toughness, wu wei, do nothing, effortless, do without doing (no energy or physical effort added on). Focus on enemy, totally relax, physical arm is not felt, spiritual arm within body is felt.

Body art in this way is that the body makes the arm like a puppet, no arm muscle or shoulder used. Body makes open close and the arm becomes subconscious. Connect but not connect. Requires sucking the arm into the body. Dantien is shoulder, feet to head is the arm. Opponent cannot feel your arm, but must feel your body. This is what your enemy feels. Four become one, everything generated out of the body movement. Self power is maximum, arm power is minimum. Let enemy feel the body first before arm.

The above three become automatic and mind focuses on the invisible, space, 6 dimension force. You feel the space, the energy is not linear but is the volume of the space. Play the hua jing. The external space power is totally separated from the internal body. You have two bodies. External (space) body goes first, internal body follows. The external force has centripetal, spiral, counterweight, long leverage and creates invisible force coming first with internal body following.

george xuFour Important Things- Indoor Study with Master George Xu

Indoor Study introduces important information for developing power in martial arts. First George focuses on a series of exercises to develop one of the most important skills for martial power he calls three dimensional shrinking /expanding with the energy body. Next, he presents several unique power stretching postures that circle and spiral and, some in particular, develop leg power. Power stretch is important to develop whole-body connectivity. Once the body is connected, the body can use chan shi chin, or spiraling, to move in three dimensions, effectively reducing the enemy's force to zero. George presents several spiral training exercises also containing shrink/expand quality and the fourth important quality that is center (dantian) energy moving first. Several multidirectional dynamic exercises are presented for developing dantian gong. Master Xu finishes with qigong for gathering earth power, human power, and heaven power and a cool demonstration of four direction striking using all these qualities. This video complements the discussion and applications of these moves found in Master Xu’s Complete Practice. Indoor Study is nearly 40 minutes non-stop workout/practice. $24.95

George XuGeorge Xu Nine Categories of Training

George Xu's Nine Categories of Training covers many single basic movements that form a powerful foundation for overall taiji training. In his usual approach, Master Xu leads Telluride, Colorado weekend workshop participants in doing the very moves he does himself to train. This August 1997 vintage footage on VHS, digitized into DVD format, is a fairly early representation of Master Xu's approach to workshop training. He shows moves that he no longer does, and many he continues this day to do. This is a good video for young trainees to see his more physical training approach of that time. If you're interested in well-focused physical, nearly two-hour training experience, this video will be a good one to use to follow along with Master Xu as he leads workshop participants. Nowadays, Master Xu moves much more energetically and with what he calls “spiritual” awareness. If you are interested in how Master Xu has evolved over the past 15 years or more, this footage will be of interest to you. You get the added benefit of an excellent training experience that encompasses many practices that he has offered through the years including: hun yuan qigong, spiral training (chan shi jin), power stretching, some Chen form, and sitting qi circles. 1hr 52min $34.95

Tai Chi Video George XuTai Chi Video George XuMaster George Xu: The Universal Principle of Yin-Yang in the Practice of Qigong, Baguazhang, and Xingyi Basics

This 2-Volume set contains qigong, single drills, bagua form, and a comprehensive set of xing-yi single animal forms and variations. You can use each as a standalone training video. He delineates practical applications of the yin-yang principle in depth in Part 1 Lecture Qigong and Taijiquan Basics and Yin-Yang Universal Law introduced by Xu presents numerous concepts that he has not publicized before and in several cases articulates it even more precisely than he has in past sessions. Among these concepts is the yin-yang universal principle that, as Master Xu explains, applies to all forms of martial arts in China. There are 300 styles of martial arts in China whose disciples are searching for secrets and claim that theirs is the “best.” But Master Xu says that for him the taijiquan principle of yin-yang is the one concept that unites them all. The thread that weaves through all internal martial arts is that of yin-yang. If you understand this then you have the answer that many have sought for ages, Master Xu says. The interplay between yin and yang applies to physical and energy including Heavy/Light, Soft/Hard, Full/ Empty, In/Out, Left/Right, Feminine/Masculine, and so on. At the same time, yin is always contained within yang and vice versa and the resultant combined force created is superior. Xu explains yin yang principles in dantien, qigong, spiral force, predator force, and earth power.

Part 2 begins with 12 minutes of Dragon Baguazhang Step-By-Step Form Practice which breaks down the form into 8 sections repeated 3 times each. Then the entire Dragon Palm is repeated twice slowly.
Part 3 Xing-Yi Basics with Application of Yin Yang Principle is presented in ‘rainy day’ stationary movement drills. George leads over 30 drills with side power, front attack power, diagonal attack power, head attack, up/down attack and how yin yang applies in these situations. The consistent use of shrinking expanding is emphasized. George discusses the development of yin yang as a progression of physical, qi energy, and spiritual control as the practitioner moves through snake body, dragon body, and tornado spirit. George finishes this video with a discussion of the advantages of training taiji, bagua, and/or xing-yi. Filmed at Cortez, Colorado workshop hosted by Susan A. Matthews, the founder of Shanti School of Taijiquan. Produced by P. Tim Richard of PTRVideo.com. (1hr 40 min each, $59.95 Set). See more at Dragon Journal Blog

George Xu Chen StyleTai Chi What is Tai Chi, Really? George Xu Answers

Tai chi has a long history in China. Long ago, martial artists in China discovered that using "internal" principles in the practice of taijiquan improved their health overall as well as their fighting skills. During recent years, tai chi has been increasingly recognized among westerners for its great health benefits. Highly-accomplished Chinese tai chi "masters" who have come to the United States since before the 1970s deserve credit for introducing tai chi to the western world.

In What is Tai Chi, Really? Master George Xu, with Susan Matthews assisting, discusses and demonstrates internal principles while performing selected Chen and Wu Style postures. They give the viewer a better idea of what to look for when practicing. Both Master Xu and Sifu Matthews demonstrate a section of the form, then discuss internal aspects. Master Xu demonstrates with Susan how power comes from utilizing internal principles of tai chi.

Whether or not you practice tai chi for its health benefits or for martial skills, it is the internal principles that make any tai chi practice beneficial.

What is Tai Chi, Really? is for anyone wanting to learn internal principles of taijiquan. The information it contains can benefit beginner or advanced practitioners, whether you focus on health or fighting. Even non-internal martial arts practitioners can use the information to incorporate into their particular style of practice.

George Xu Chen Style Tai Chi Martial Arts VideoInternal Structure Testing: Chen Style Tai Chi
with George Xu and Susan Matthews

One of the best things about attending a tai chi workshop with a master from China is having an opportunity to see internal martial art principles applied by a highly experienced practitioner. To understand the principles you should train with a high-level master as often as possible. But not everyone is close enough to a teacher, or can afford to attend regular private lessons, or even weekly group classes, with an authentic master teacher.

Watching Internal Structure Testing is like being part of a private instruction session. Master Xu and Susan Matthews discuss energy-body movement concepts while they practice selected Chen Style postures. They convey fundamental and advanced internal principles of tai chi that everyone needs to know to reach new levels of ability and well-being. These include beginning stance, single whip, and half of the first section of the Chen form.

Internal Structure Testing is a unique example of a teacher working closely with a student to reach that ever-fluid point of understanding - what the master knows and the student struggles to grasp. You will enjoy the personable interaction between Master George Xu and long-time student, Susan Matthews, who is also a highly accomplished tai chi practitioner and teacher, as well.

Master George Xu is well-known and admired for his open and very informational style of teaching. For him, no secret is too secret. He believes that if you give freely you will be rewarded ten-fold for your generosity. Master Xu is highly sought-after by students and teachers the world over. He has regular workshops through out the year in the United States, Mexico, Japan, Denmark, Switzerland, Norway, France, and Italy.

George Xu Tai Chi DVDMaster George Xu Tai Chi Treasures
Beijing China Camp 2010

This video presents Master Xu’s exercises and theory presented over several sessions at the China Camp 2010 in Lan Fang near Beijing. Here, he focused on practicing and controlling ‘BIG’ energy of the space outside and around the fighter and opponent. Related to this is the integration of inside and outside forces, the internal and the space; for example, the mind is on the outside energy, not the internal snake. He separates hand/arm usage into levels: first, the mind is on the hand and the body moves the hand; second, internal energy moves the body that moves the hand all together; third, the internal energy body moves the hand; and fourth, the outside space moves the energy body.

Additionally, superior force of the external space is an integration of two yin/yang forces during an attack. Ultimately, one practices all-direction force that is an empty, one-unit force, and he presents a heavy power stretch sequence to create these opposing forces.
He describes the internal body center as a tiger and discusses how the arm is the body. He stresses integrating the leg into the center power and how to create earth power. He presents dantian gong exercises for creating this center force. Over 25 exercises, explanations and demonstrations on this video give the practitioner a path to these higher-level skills.

George Xu Yu Xiao Lin Martial Arts VideoSpecial Edition 2-Volume Set Celebrates 20 years of Hosting Visiting Teachers from China

In this Special Edition 2-Volume set celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the George Xu Summer Camp at La Honda, California, Master George Xu and Master Yu Xiao Lin present single-move drills, qigong sets, and form demonstrations. Master Xu, who has hosted many masters from China every June in the serene coastal redwoods, was honored for his dedication to introducing traditional Chinese internal martial arts to practitioners in the United States. These special DVDs share in his effort to expand knowledge and practice of taijiquan and other internal martial arts in the West.

Each video in this 2-volume set is devoted to the lessons of each teacher. Masters Xu and Yu share diverse, yet complementary, information reflecting their backgrounds and teaching methods. Viewers can easily follow along as you would in an actual class session.

In Part One, Master Xu lectures on his “predator” theory to help participants understand key fighting principles: the four maximums—power, weight, speed and freedom; and the four “uns” un-understandable, un-resistible, unbreakable, and unpredictable. Master Xu’s lectures highlight Earth power, or the return of qi from the Earth, which each movement. This is not the highest level, he says, but it is one that many have a good chance of achieving. Also contained in the DVD is Master Xu leading Xing-Yi drills and an extensive number of basic movements. His repetitive and rhythmic drills are great exercises for loosening tight shoulders, for cultivating stronger connectivity, and allowing qi to flow. Master Xu also does two sessions of Huen Yuan Qigong, including 11 different circle movements each. He taught Chen Style broadsword during the camp, which he demonstrates at the end of Part One. He also demos the first section of his Chen Style form during the camp’s demo night.

Yu Xiao Lin George Xu Martial Arts VideoIn Part Two, Master Yu, who is 70 years old and has practiced traditional Chinese martial arts for 55 years, demonstrates several form styles, including Wu Style (Wu Yu Xiang), Chen Style (three variations, including a fa jing form) and the very old Yang Ban Hou and Yang Jiang Hou forms, which are little known even in China. Both forms come from the sons of Yang Lu Chan who developed the Yang Style form and system. Yang Jiang Hou has been called the historical “missing link” bridging Chen and Yang styles. In an indoor class setting, Master Yu also shows push hands principles of peng, liu, ji, an, li, tsai, shou, and cao. Assisted by students, he demonstrates variations in close-up detail for viewers to learn from. He also includes in his lessons eight walking drills that complement form training. Throughout camp, Master Yu emphasized relaxation (fang song), rounding out the five-day training with a qigong for health set of only four moves.

Both masters demonstrate applications of some of the movements practiced during class sessions and demonstrations. All in all, this set is a great addition to the library of practitioners interested in Master Xu’s latest expressions of his predator theory in lecture and practice and in capturing rarely seen Yang Ban Hou and Yang Jiang Hou forms. Whatever your specific interests, you will be contributing to the continuing effort to preserve knowledge and practice of traditional Chinese internal martial arts. ©2009 $49.95.

Also about balancing yin and yang and thwarting the advance of an opponent by taking advantage of his energy and use it to repel him. He repels himself in effect because it's his own energy you're utilizing. Master Wang suggest techniques, such as opening the lower back and back of the knees, to release trapped energy and help cultivate longevity.

Liu Hong Cai

Vol 1 Part B- Liu Hong Cai (Chen Style). Introduction to Chen Style Silk Reeling: Basic Exercises and Demonstrations

Master Liu describes two types of silk reeling, a wrapping type of energy 'doing' the movement and 'using' it to affect another. He stresses that you have to understand energy to apply silk reeling. Silk reeling is a gathering and closing of energy, or power in spiraling movement. Energy manifests itself differently in different people. Whatever form it takes you must learn to maintain the feeling and gain control of it as it happens to you when you're doing the form. Circulate qi through body so that it passes through the body to apply. He shows how doing single whip. The feeling, or the energy, has to arrive at the exact point (da wei) not just the body. He demonstrates this in the first move of the form. Ren GangVol 1 Part C- Ren Gang (Yang Style) Internal Principles of Taijiquan: Lecture and Demonstration

How to use energy to move. Don't use muscular/structural power. Stop thinking of yourself as muscle. To do so, think about yourself as bone structure, then go on from there to be nothing at all. Demonstrates how not to react to the touch of another person/opponent and not to concentrate on the point of contact. 'The entire body is aware.' Use the whole body to feel and to understand completely, not just arms. He talks about Gan Shou (feeling), Ting Jing (listening), Kong (emptiness), Fa Jing (explosive force), Hua (absorb and dissipate), Song (relax), Xing (heart). How much can we feel of the things around us? Listen with your body, not just with your ears, or an arm where someone is touching you. Be relaxed, don't tense up, listen with your heart. Listen to the entire person, sensing that person as a whole being. Don't use just technique to break their hold. That's not complete understanding. Become an energy being, not a physical entity, so that your opponent won't have anything to grab onto.

Shin Jin Ba Gu is a Lan Shou style power stretching set. It helps to build good physical structure while releasing trapped qi. A very good complement to what Master Liu Hong Cai says about the need to have correct physical structure as well as energy alignment. Master Shou talks about filling the body with qi. The tips of the fingers are flush, even pudgy, with qi. In push hands he pushes blindfolded to demonstrate how to sense the other person's movement with the body, not look with the eyes only. He also works with participants in Da Lu, or walking push hands.
